NOTICES: The GT24M Research Paper is to be handed in before before 4pm on Thursday May 10, 2007.  The Research Paper must be handed in at the Examinations Centre University of the West Indies (Mona) - This applies for both UWI and MIND Students

UPDATED - RESEARCH PAPER OVERVIEW

  • Outline of the Research Paper

    Introduction – Team Effort (2.5%)

You can either put your individual hypotheses, conceptualization and operalization in this section or in the research design section. Your individual hypothesis must be repeated on the cover sheet.

Literature Review - Team Effort with individual components – (2.5%)

Research Design – Team Effort (5%)

    Data Analysis and Findings

    Some other notes

    1. Data collection is a collective exercise

    2. Data entry is a collective exercise

    3. Data Analysis is an individual exercise

    4. Writing up the Data Analysis and Findings Section is an individual exercise

    5. Writing up the Discussion of findings is a individual exercise

    6. Collating the Report/Project and writing up the Conclusion and Recommendations is a group exercise

    7. Therefore if a group member does not submit his or her section of the paper it will not affect the entire paper – they will get a grade out of 15 for the Introduction, literature review  Research Design and the Conclusion and Recommendation section of the paper but will not get the 10% for the data analysis and findings section not the 25% for the discussion of findings section
    8. The Data Analysis and Findings section will vary in size. Long tables such as frequencies (more then 3 pages for one frequency) should be placed in the Appendices, tables which take three or less pages should be placed in the Data Analysis and Findings section and a brief description of the findings strategically position either above or under the table.
    9. The recommended page number for the Discussion of findings section is 10 pages minimum.
    10. The final date for submission is May 10, 2007
    11. Research Should be submitted to the Examinations Section on or before 4 pm
    12. No Tutor is to proof read the report project before submission.

  • WHEN SUBMITTING THE FINAL PAPER, ALSO NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
  • Submit Data and the Syntax on CD
  • Submit all completed instruments with the names of who collected the data on it (This is to be placed in an envelope).
  • Everyone needs to download complete a 'Peer Evaluation Form' which says that everyone reviewed the final Research Paper and were in agreement for it to be submitted. For the sake of confidentiality, a group member may choose to place his/her evaluation form in a sealed envelope then place that envelope in the project package. Loose/emailed evaluations will NOT be accepted. DOWNLOAD THE FORM HERE

    REMEMBER

    • The literature review is a group effort with individual section. The literature review must have a general introduction (introducing the topic) then individual sections relating to each hypothesis being tested. Each student must contribute a these sections (a minimum of 1 & 1/2  pages of text per student). For example, if the study is on the impact of CSME and there are three students in a group, then there would be a general introduction about CSME (One page). Student A whose hypothesis postulated Students from smaller states believe that they are less likely to benefit from the CSME then those from larger state or There is a positive relationship between the belief in benefits from CSME and the country size of students, would write a section of the literature review which covers issues related to size of country and benefits from CSME or issues of country size and how it is related to economic and or political attempts of creating a regional blocks. This can be literature taken from experiences with the EU, or OPEC, the formation of the USA or literature which covers such issues that might have bearing on the current CSME experience. Student B who hypothesizes that Students from UWI believe that they are less likely to benefit from CSME than their UTECH counterparts would submit a one and a half page section looking at the literature covering the employment opportunities of CSME and so on.
    • Each student in a group is to collect a minimum of 33 instruments regardless of the size of the group.
    • Those students who are doing individual assignments because of special circumstances are to collect a minimum of 100 instruments
    • All batches of 33 instruments must be merged into one dataset and group members must analyze the merged dataset (NOT THEIR INDIVIDUAL 33 COMPLETED INSTRUMENT)
    • Students must put a SECTION COVER for THEIR section of the Data Analysis and Findings as well as the Discussion of Findings section of the report.
    • A section cover must include the ID number of the individual student.
    • In addition to this the individual hypothesis which is being tested should also be placed on the cover. See example below

    Frequently asked questions

    1. Do I use 99, 9 or 2 for missing cases?

If you are doing a straight quantitative study, meaning you are going to code the open ended question then the standard is to use 99 for missing cases. If however you plan to qualitatively analyze the open-ended cases then you would copy all the open ended questions to a word document (for example copy all the answers to question 5 on one word document) and then analyze it. In instances such as these you would use 2 to indicate a missing value and 1 to indicate that the respondent had answered the question.
